The US restricts export of two frontier models, then lifts it
In June the US Department of Commerce placed export controls on Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5. They were lifted on 30 June and access was restored on 1 July. For about two weeks, a European user's access to a frontier model was a question of American trade policy.

What happened
Short episode, large implication. Export controls are an instrument built for physical goods and chips. Pointing them at a model turns access to a piece of software into a lever in a trade relationship.
This is the item on this page with the most direct European angle, and it got the least attention.
What it points at
If capability keeps concentrating in a handful of American and Chinese labs, then who may use which model becomes foreign policy rather than procurement. Europe currently has no model of its own at this level and no seat at that table.
