Genome language models design working viruses

Science published the generative design of novel bacteriophages using genome language models, deployed against phage-resistant bacteria. The same method that writes text wrote a working organism.

What happened

Bacteriophages are viruses that infect bacteria. Designing new ones is useful: resistant infections are a real and growing medical problem, and a phage that works where antibiotics no longer do is a genuine good.

This entry is here for the other half of that sentence. The capability does not know what it is aimed at.

What it points at

This is the dual-use item on this page, and the one where the gap between what a lab can do and what any regulator can see is widest. Nothing in European or American AI rules currently attaches to a model that designs biology.

Editor's notewhat we make of it, kept apart from what happened

The dual-use item. Lead with the good: resistant infections kill people and a working phage is a straightforward gain.

Then one sentence on the other side, and move on. Do not linger, do not speculate about how it could be misused, and do not turn it into a thriller. The point is that the capability does not know what it is aimed at.
