Google and Character.AI settle over chatbots and young users

Lawsuits about chatbots and minors were settled in January. In June, Florida subpoenaed OpenAI, the first US state to do so.

What happened

The cases concerned what chatbots said to young users over long conversations. They settled, which means no court ruled on the underlying question and no precedent was set.

Florida's subpoena in June was the first time a US state formally demanded documents from OpenAI. Others followed later in the year, for a different reason: see the state attorneys general.

What we do not know

A settlement buys silence. What the companies knew, and when, is not in the public record, and this entry cannot tell you.

Editor's notewhat we make of it, kept apart from what happened

One line, no elaboration. This is the item where an audience will want a story and the public record does not contain one, because it was settled.

The useful point is structural: a settlement means no ruling, no precedent, and no answer about what the companies knew.
